How to press DTF transfers: settings that actually work
A working baseline for pressing DTF transfers on cotton: 300–325°F (149–163°C), 10–15 seconds, medium-firm pressure, then peel according to your film type and finish with a short second press. Those numbers are starting points, not gospel — your film supplier's spec sheet wins any disagreement, and every press reads temperature a little differently. Here is the full sequence and how to adjust it per fabric.
Step 0: pre-press the garment
Press the bare garment for 3–5 seconds first. This flattens seams and wrinkles and — more importantly — drives out moisture. Fabric holds more water than it looks like it does, and steam escaping under the transfer is a common cause of patchy adhesion.
The main press, by fabric
- 100% cotton — 300–325°F, 10–15 seconds, medium-firm pressure. The forgiving default
- Polyester and performance wear — drop to roughly 270–285°F and keep dwell short. High heat scorches poly and causes dye migration (garment dye bleeding up through the print, turning whites pink or gray)
- Blends — split the difference; start around 285–300°F and test
- Heavy fleece and hoodies — same temperatures, but firm pressure matters more; seams and zippers may need a press pillow to even out the surface
Peel and second press
Peel hot, warm, or cold according to the film you bought — peeling a cold-peel film hot is a classic cause of lifted edges. After peeling, press again for 5–10 seconds with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet over the design. The second press sinks the print into the fabric, improves wash durability, and (with parchment) gives a more matte, less plasticky finish.
The mistakes that cause failures
- Trusting the press's dial — platen temperature can read 15–25°F off; verify with heat strips or an infrared thermometer
- Uneven pressure — a worn platen or thick seams leave cold corners; that is where peeling starts
- Skipping the pre-press on humid days, then blaming the film
- Mixing peel types in one production run and losing track of which sheet is which

Usually pressure or peel timing: uneven pressure leaves edges under-bonded, and peeling a cold-peel film while hot lifts corners. Verify platen pressure across the whole area and match peel timing to the film spec. A second press also strengthens edges.
Not reliably. DTF adhesive needs consistent temperature and real pressure across the whole design; irons deliver neither. Results may survive a few washes but will not match a heat press.
Give the adhesive 24–48 hours to fully set before the first wash, then wash inside out in cold water without bleach or fabric softener for the longest print life.
