What DPI do you need for DTF printing?
For DTF printing, aim for 300 DPI (dots per inch) at the final print size. Artwork at 150–300 DPI is generally acceptable; below 150 DPI, prints turn visibly soft and pixelated. The critical phrase is at final print size — a file that is 300 DPI at 4 inches wide is only 100 DPI when stretched to 12 inches.
The math, in one line
Effective DPI = artwork pixel width ÷ print width in inches. A 2400px-wide file printed 8″ wide is 300 DPI (crisp). The same file printed 16″ wide is 150 DPI (acceptable). Printed 20″ wide, it is 120 DPI — expect complaints.
Why low-DPI uploads are the #1 cause of reprints
Customers do not think in DPI. They upload a logo saved from a website — 400px wide — and ask for a full-chest print. If nobody catches it, the shop prints it, presses it, ships it, and eats the refund when the customer says it looks blurry. The film, ink, garment, and labor are all sunk cost by the time the problem is visible.
Catch it at the source
The only cheap place to catch resolution problems is before checkout, on the customer's own screen. A live DPI readout that recalculates as the customer scales their artwork turns an invisible technical spec into a simple traffic light: green means crisp, amber means acceptable, red means fix your file. The customer self-corrects — shrinks the print, or uploads a better file — before money changes hands.

300 DPI is the safe target for photographic or detailed artwork. Bold, simple vector-style designs can look fine at 200 DPI. Below 150 DPI, softness is visible at arm's length on most designs.
Traditional upscaling just spreads the same pixels thinner. AI upscalers can help with some art styles, but results vary — treat them as a salvage tool, not a substitute for proper source files.
PNG with a transparent background is the workhorse. Vector formats (SVG, AI, PDF) are resolution-independent and rasterize crisply at any size. JPGs work but have no transparency.
